- Summary of Existing Encoding Standards
Name # of Han characters
CNS ... -1,-2 (big5) 15,000
CNS 11643 -1,-2,...,-7 40,000?
GB2312-80 6~7,000
JIS0208 7,000
JIS0212 5,000
UNICODE 30,000
- Han characters in HongKong by P. T. Ho
There are one charater code set created by own.
so, not GB nor CNS family.
CJK(Chinese, Japan, Korean) library is encoded UNICODE.
People in HongKong use various characters and creating
a lot of private ones.
So, 40,000 characters are, at least, necessary.
- Han characters in Singapore by Michelle Chineg
WEB page
electronic books are written in GB code.
There are some projects on other languages, such as Tamil.
- Han characters in China by Fan Yi
Hardware(chip) for displaying C/J/K Han characters are
being developped.
All characters were displayed with one or two 10bit bytes.
It can display many langage at the same time.
- Han characters in Japan by Masataka Ohta
There are different encoding schemes.
7bit JIS Old
7bit JIS New
8bit SJIS
8bit EUC
On the Internet, only 7bit JIS of ISO-2022-JP is used even
for PCs.
- Coordination of Chinese Communication
Should we unify code points?
Or, just provide unification tables?
What is the purpose of unification? Code space efficiently?
- Difficulty in the coordination
Who is the authotiry?
How should we handle Existing Coding.
One characters have several representations. So, which one
should be unified?
People in China and Taiwan, Sinagpore and Hongkong should
communicate with each other using electronic schmes, such as E-mail.
Chinese has 3 code sets(GB, CNC, ?).
First, Chinese communication should be coordinated.
How PCs with GB and CNS fonts interact?
PC (GB) (*) <-------> (*) PC (CNS)
At (*), translation is necessary.
Should the union or intersection of GB and CNS provided?
Uniform apploach is already proposed.
First, Chinese Character Sub-WG is needed whose purpose is
to create a concrete document (RFC?) on Chinese communication
over the Internet.
Zhu, Heifeng has volunteered to coordinate the effort.
Draft charter and schedule will apear soon.
